Total observation turns people into psychopaths
Scientists study demonstrated the negative consequences of the invasion of "big brother" in people's personal lives.
In the experiment, researchers at the Helsinki Institute for Information Technology studied the effect of ubiquitous surveillance systems in a building. In order to study the effect of continuous monitoring, the researchers placed in the homes of ten Finnish families video cameras, microphones, software for recording the use of personal computers, wireless networks, smartphones, TVs and DVD-players.
Twelve participants completed monthly special forms and prepare a report on their psychological well-being, and they were questioned by scientists at 6 and 12 months of total home control.
As a result, scientists have observed a number of serious adverse changes in the behavior and well-being experimental. For all participants, except one, the monitoring system was a source of irritation, restlessness, anxiety, and even anger.
However, the observation does not cause mental health problems, comparable in severity with depression or alcoholism. However, one family refused to take further part in the experiment after 6 months, stating that a violation of privacy and anonymity has become intolerable.
It should be noted that significant negative changes in well-being and behavior of people came after 3 months of the experiment, which differs from the generally accepted notions like "it was hard at first, but then got used." After 3 months, the majority of test began trying to hide their activities from sensors, finding hiding places in the house. However, some have moved their usual business of the house wall.
Interestingly, the easiest people have adapted to video surveillance, eliminating concerns about their own nakedness and possible negative evaluation of their appearance. In this case, the surveillance of communication and work on the computer a lot more people perceived negatively. Thus, the loss of anonymity in using the computer for the people is more important than the possible public nudity. Scientists believe that this is due to the huge role of computer technology in modern life - a big part of our social activities mediated by computers today.
Finnish researchers emphasize that the experiment involved volunteers who themselves have expressed such a desire. But even they have a total observation caused a lot of stress, which other people can be much more powerful.
